Just finished watching Star Trek - TNG, A snippet of conversation between Captain Picard and a visiting Admiral had me reaching for my Mr Angry from Croydon pen to write to the Times about the misuse of language on Cult TV shows. Instead I wrote this little snippet. The word that triggered my irritation? Alternative
Admiral - We can't destroy the asteroid, we'd lose the ship. We must save that ship at all costs. Can't you give me a third alternative.
Picard - No I can't. Unless you're Gladstone, it goes against all logic and the known rules of linguistics for alternatives to come in threes. I've given you two, pick one.
