Laon Cathedral

Our away-day trip to Laon was overdue. Laon is the medieval capital of France. Charlemagne was born there. It boasts the oldest Cathedral in the country. The views from the ramparts (if you can find a place to park) are spectacular.

We arrived after a leisurely lunch on the way down at the Auberge de Vendeul. We climbed up to the Cathedral from the first car park which is just outside the entrance gate of the old town. After the visit to the Cathedral, we shopped in the town where MWNN discovered a shop selling tea and some wonderful freshly-ground coffee.

At tea time, we picnicked in the car park overlooking the view of the countryside far below.

It's a fascinating town (city?) with a long history.

It's wonderful inside. A lot of the stained glass survived both World Wars.

Looks gorgeous. I don't know that part of France at all so many thanks for sharing.

Laon is South of St Quentin - just at the northern tip of the Champagne region. Champagne is worth a really long visit, particularly if you can cruise the area by boat. Mind you, Laon is a long way from the nearest navigable waterway.

We stayed in Laon a couple of years ago and loved it, especially the cows on the cathedral!

Are you back home now?

I don't think I could stay in Laon for long. I found it quite claustraphobic and was glad to see clear sky as we emerged into the car park again.

Yes, back home until the next 'repairs' trip sometime in July/August. Repairs are weather dependant as we need dry access to the engine room to track and repair the leak.

More pics of cool stuff I'll never see. Thanks!

Well then, you'll have to show me some cool pics of places in the US that I'll never see. (I don't do flying.)

Oh dear! Well, I'll see what I can do. We have a couple of trips planned in the next few months. At least one of them should be interesting. (Not sure the drive between here and Ohio is going to offer much, but I'm hoping we'll go by way of Lexington, Kentucky and I can tour some of the amazing horse farms there.)

I'm really enjoying your photos!
