The Ron

We've just returned from taking Ron for a walk before the rain hit. It is really important that we try to keep his activity levels similar to those he had when we were in France. Before we went away, he was somewhat overweight. After nine weeks of a lot of exercise, he has lost 2kg and is looking really good.

Port 'estate', looking north(ish)

We spent most of those nine weeks in port. The Port de Plaisance is 2 hectares of security-fenced grounds - plenty of space for strenous ball-chasing or general off-lead mooching.

The down-stay

I availed of the facilities to add the 'down-stay' to Ron's repertoire. He's reluctant to play that game with his precious (Billy Ball) so I used a stick or pine cone. Once in the down-stay, I walked away, increasing the distance at each session.

The 'fetch'

Then I'd turn and give the command 'fetch'. He soon got the hang of it. Unfortunately, it seems to have been place-defined as we had to train him all over again when trying it out at the local 'rec'.

He's also sulking a bit because his 'home estate' is tiny in comparison to his watery one. Which might explain why he's refusing to take part in eradication the mice which colonised the house during our absence.

Nine weeks of working on the boat - I hoped for a rest when we got home. So far, we've disinfected the utility room and kitchen. Evidence (poop) is also in the front room, the staircase, and my bedroom/study

Yes, I can see that being confined in a small space would be hard on a dog. And certainly the exercise is good for both dog and Master.

Very true.

Have you reminded Ron that he is a terrier? LOL Good luck with the mice - they are sneaky little critters (and yes, they poop everywhere - makes them easy to find, but disgusting)

So, are you home for the summer? Or just taking a rest from all the boat fixing?

Frequently. He doesn't believe me.

Bit of both. We need spare parts to fix the remaining leaks on the boat so will have to go back some time.

Good luck with eradicating the mice. We had to block almost every entrance point with wire wool and the sneaky little devils still got in!

Thanks. I'm getting a bit paranoid about them.

Ron is still such an adorable little guy!! Look at that happy doggie face!

Awww - thanks.

Such great pictures :) and I commiserate with you on the mice.

Thanks - on both counts.

GOOD Ron! Good down-stay!!

Yeah, he may think that the same rules don't apply at home.

In our dog news, Catie is INCREDIBLY trainable. I'm teaching her one new thing a week. I could probably go faster but I'm being consistent. She learns things in a matter of hours. She knew “up!” (stand up on back legs) “Sit” & “lie down” in sequence, by voice or hand signals. This week, we trained her on “head down” after she's lying down, with an accompanying hand signal. 1 hour, flat. She is sooo good. Next is treat-balanced on the nose. That one is gonna be tough!

The 'stay' is so important. Ron is totally naive about traffic. We rarely walk him in town (apart from the occassional trip to the market) and there are cars coming and going in the Port. He's very quick to learn, too.

Dogs are so much easier to train than children.

It's so lovely to see a post from you \o/ Ron looks intensely happy there.

Yuck, mice. Stinky things with no basic manners :D

YaY! You're back. You know I was up in your neck of the woods in December? I would have popped in to say 'hi' but there was a funeral to attend.

Can I borrow Lilycat for the mice - Ron is useless. I keep telling him he's a terrier but he doesn't believe me. He's very happy in his ignorance of mice-eradication duties.

She wouldn't be any good unless they walked into her open jaw. Rubbish lazy, she is :(

Ron's looking really good there.

I can sympathise about the mice - we had them in the garage over the winter and I still can't go out there without checking for poo and looking in the trap.

*sends a kitten*

I'd love a kitten. But it's impractical. We're away for periods that are too long to leave a cat home alone and we've seen so many boaters frantically calling for AWAL cats that we wouldn't dream of taking one with us.

Not sure that Ron could be trusted not to eat a kitten.

Argh! I hate mice! And I don't flaunt that word around - I say what I mean and I mean what I say!

Hope you do get to rest.

Oh, and I'm jealous of Ron. I need to shed some weight myself. :(
