I listened to the news on the radio at 7 this morning with tears rolling down my face. Good news is rare these days, and this is good on such an amazing scale.

It's amazing, isn't it?

Edited - Just been told that screencap was photo-shopped.

10!

I'm pleased to see it's all going so well. Let's hope things stay that way.

11 now.

It's truly remarkable, especially the pictures from underground.

I was watching over breakfast - such a wonderful achievement.

I'm glued to BBC News24 and knitting some squares for a comfort blanket project while MNN plays with his birthday Kindle.

I've had the TV on since very early this morning. Was slightly concerned when duct tape appeared at once point to fix something inside the cage and then they cheerfully kicked the sides of the cage to make it slide the first time it went down! But oh, such joy on everyone's face!

Duct tape is the cure-all beloved of all engineers. I was worried when we saw an adjustment to what looked liike a jubilee clip on the cable being done with a pair of plyers.

Not being cynical ('cos I've given that up for Lent) but I wonder how long it will be before this item slips off the world's news-teams Top Ten?

It was a truly incredible night. :)

I'm still not recovered from lack of sleep.

Yes .. a marvellous and uplifting victory of the human spirit .. a miracle.

I am thinking of buying Lyle a Kindle 3g Wireless .. so much easier than taking a suitcase of books to France and will also subscribe to a newspaper for the 4 months there as not many English papers available in P de V except sometimes the witch has one on a Monday or a Tuesday. I would be interested to hear what MWNN thinks of his Kindle. J.

We deliberately didn't opt for the 3G Kindle. Using one while 'roaming' away from your home country is frought with additional costs (including additional cost on top of subscriptions for which you have already paid) and connection problems (I read the discussions on Kindle users forums. We both intend to download stuff to our Kindles at home to take with us. MWNN and I both favour the laptop/notebook when in the vicinity of wi-fi connection in France.

MWNN has also discovered that if iou 'exchange documents' from one device (e.g. your PC) and your Kindle, it is done via your Kindle's unique email address and - you've guessed it - there is a charge.

Well, that's certainly food for thought. You are right in that I will certainly download books before we leave and I don't suppose that there will be anything that's so important to download in France that cannot wait until I return home. Thank you .. I think you have just saved me $50!!!
