Chagny

A couple of the locks up the flight to Chagny were far more turbulent than the deep Chalon lock. A hire boat with Germans aboard was going up with us so we let them go ahead in each lock. The waves splashing up their stern were going over our roof. Twelve locks and ten km took about 3 hours - just enough time to bake the bread, wash the dishes and do the laundry in the trusty old 'butterchurn' washing device. By 7pm the washing was dry thanks to a vigorous breeze and many sunny periods. There was no room at the inn L'Escale (the staff of the 3* Michelin L'Ameloise eat there) for Sunday lunch, it being Mother's Day in France, so we'll motor on the 4km to Santenay and picnic there in the shade.
