Not just because I write fanfic -
4th-Aug-2005 01:17 pm
For Us
OK - like uisge_beatha, mainly because I write fanfic and we writers are an endangered species and we've just lost one very talented one, that I know of, from my Flist. A few of us will, no doubt, soldier on until we've finished the WIP at least but there's not much incentive to continue after that.

So - if you're reading the stuff, do what Spike tells you -

I put Chapter 7 of Soul Searching up, yesterday - here and at Babblings and Fanfic. Headsup for writers who use Blondiebear. ceit tells me, it's been hacked, and she doesn't know when it'll be back or, nor what condition it will be in when it's restored.

On a different note, I experienced great frustration when I started the Introductory Masterclass design. The first 'lesson' demonstrated using stem stitch on the flower stalks and the mid veins in the leaves. This is a fairly easy stitch and I completely ballsed it up. MWNN suggested I practiced it, so I dug out a project I'd bought years ago and never got round to doing. Stem stitched the stalks as easy as pie on that one. The difference? Not the stitch, the thread. Stem stitch in cotton, can do it with my eyes closed (almost); with piper silks it's a bitch!

jennylyle You can see this because it's a public entry, any you can't see are friend's locked and/or filtered. (There were two between the last public entry and this one. I just unlocked them.) I've already taught you how to overcome the problem.

I'm feeling guilty about Soul Searching because I haven't managed to read it yet. I've got it marked on my TBR list but I think I need Family first and I haven't done that yet either. I just wanted you to know I'm not ignoring you I just need to catch up with you!

Don't feel guilty, K, this wasn't aimed at individuals, just a bit of a wake-up call for those who read and never comment.
4th-Aug-2005 01:55 pm (UTC)
I know it wasn't aimed at individuals but I just thought I needed to comment on not commenting so to speak *g*. I think sometimes a lot of readers are actually nervous about leaving a comment as they feel they have to say something deep and meaningful, but I've learnt over the years that authors appreciate *any* comment! I'm not a paragon of virtue about commenting, but on LJ if I've read it I *usually* comment.

Blondiebear.com is back up- I think everything is okay with it. Try it and let me know.
4th-Aug-2005 03:51 pm (UTC)
It seems OK and let me upload the new chapter. The list of characters still lacks Lorne and Illyria but I'll stop nagging about that in the relief that the board appears unharmed.
4th-Aug-2005 04:29 pm (UTC)
I was going to make one of those banners, but I couldn't think of anything witty to put on it (I'll never make an iconner)
4th-Aug-2005 04:35 pm (UTC)
It doesn't have to be witty. That one isn't, but it gets the point across in a meaningful way.

I'm sure you could do one with Illyria in it. Whatever she says is always good for a snigger.

You might be onto something there...

I wait with much anticipation of suitable threats from the Blue Meanie.

I'm trying to wean myself off of reading WIPs at the moment because I have been burnt with so many that seem to just get left. I do have them all bookmarked and lined up awaiting the magical FINISHED sign though.

I'm not a writer, so my feedback is rarely technical about sentence structure or "voice". It is usually "you made me cry" or "you made me laugh" or "I loved that - More, please" and I always wonder if that is what the author wants to get or if it is just wasting space on the page. *sighs at my own inadequacy...*

If you think you might like to read Soul Searching when it's finished, might I recommend the prequel - Family:Blood Calls to Blood

I always wonder if that is what the author wants to get or if it is just wasting space on the page.

I can't speak for other writers, but all I want is some indication that the number of hits a chapter receives is a true reflection of the numbers that are actually reading it and not just visiting the page and turning away again. For example, Soul Searching has had 653 hits so far over its 8 chapters, but only 16 comments.

I'll certainly give the prequel a try - I am always on the lookout for new fic! The thing with WIPs is that I get really invested in it, I refresh the page, I check for updates regularly and it is so disappointing when the time between new chapters gets longer and longer and then just stops. I know authors write without payment and I really do appreciate it, but sometimes when a story that has a really good hook just... dies, I get so frustrated.

So now I just read them when they are done. But I will take myself off to read the prequel - and I WILL comment!

That's the stats on Fanfic, by the way, there are more on Blondie Bear and Babblings but I don't have a stats counter on LJ.

I like it when yearns for Spike , even just a little bit.

And I like salads! Ok , they don't like me and by the time I put everything on them they are no longer low calorie but I still like them.

I like to make B. yearn for Spike. What was it he said ' You don't realise how good what you've got is until you've lost it'? Or something like that.

they are no longer low calorie

Anything low calorie is definitely one of the Dark side's inventions - to torture us.

Thank you for commenting, I didn't know you were reading the fic.
5th-Aug-2005 10:44 am (UTC) - Re: I like it when [Buffy] yearns for Spike
I didn't realize that the word Buffy didn't show up. Sometimes it does that when my computer gets a little hot and I type while looking at the keyboard and forget to proof it.

Proof that low cal is evil can be found in sour cream with artificial fat. It's evil and nasty-tasting. Not to mention a horrible thing to do to a baked potato.

See - Whistler was right after all. BtW, did you understand the reference to Wimpy and Popeye? One of my betas didn't get it, and I wondered why.

I shall gladly pay you Tuesday for a Burger today..

Does that answer your question?

< vbg >

But then you're an American and probably get the reruns of the older cartoons in which Wimpy appeared. He disappeared in the later series and we don't get the early ones repeated here. bogwitch is too young to remember (if she was even born) when the older version aired in the UK.
5th-Aug-2005 04:04 pm (UTC) - Re: I like it when [Buffy] yearns for Spike
Actually I probably got it more from the comic strips than the cartoons. When I would go to the library I would pick out novels to take home but would read the book collections of comic strips while I waited for it to get close to time for the bus. I spent a lot of time hanging out at the library so I did this a lot and when I read all of the comics section I would start over.

I haven't seen any of the cartoons in at least 10 years.

Eep - please don't give up :( I'm still saving you up to read.
5th-Aug-2005 04:09 pm (UTC)
Fear not, I'm very much of the school of ' I've started so I'll finish'.
7th-Aug-2005 05:22 am (UTC)
Well, I hope once you've finished this fic, you will be inspired to continue. There are so few of us that don't write 'ships or sex oriented fiction.

I wonder if fanfic writers should post a poll with each chapter.
Will continue reading
Won't continue reading

Something like that? Some of the people who don't leave feedback might actually participate in a poll. In fact, given the popularity of polls and memes, I suspect they might feel compelled to choose.

Hmmm. Maybe I should give it a try. Maybe when I get back to The Vorpal Blade.

That's a very good suggestion. I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to do it because I started out posting my stuff to Blondie Bear and Fanfic before I thought of posting on Live Journal and I'm fairly certain the bulk of my readership is there. I started posting to LJ after Twelve Days because I acquired a new readership that is mainly based here.
8th-Aug-2005 11:12 pm (UTC)
I know when I've nominated you, I have used the Blondie Bear URL and that is where I read your fic, so changes are you are correct.

I may try it on my next chapter of The Vorpal Blade just for grins - assuming I can figure out how to make a poll work. And I'm not sure if you could block others from seeing the results. I don't know that I would care about that but a lot of people might.

One experiment coming up, then!
