I finally made a decision about the new laptop and ordered a Dell, with all bells and whistles (does it make the tea? I asked the very nice young Irishman from the tech. help-desk, when I phoned for advice on the customise your Dell page.) Now I'm panicking that I didn't opt for the right bluetooth card and can't speak to anyone until Monday. By which time, will it be too late to make any changes? I asked the nice young Irishwoman at the sales reception. Don't know, sorry was her response.

I'm also worried that I haven't had my invite to the Gala Dinner at the Discworld Con. despite the fact that bellinghwoman reported stuffing envelopes earlier in the week. Sorry I missed wishing you a Happy Birthday. Hope tonight's party is wild and wonderful (or everything you want it to be.)

They went out in the post this morning, so the Royston <-> Hitchin snail should get it to you on Monday, I guess.

OK, don't panic.

We do post off the invites to foreign addresses a bit earlier, just to even the playing field a bit.

I envy you your laptop. Dells are lovely, but not so impressed with their technical support, lovely Irish accents aside. My last experience nearly had me order all the wrong stuff for my long awaited iPod.

But it arrived this morning, along with a new USB 2 card and cable, and isn't it beautiful? Mind you, it's been stressful getting it up and running thanks to RealOne being all precious about being the default CD player and encouraging Windows to crash and give ominous "fatal system error" type messages. Scared the bejesus out of me, I can tell you. But I'm quietly proud of myself for sorting it out (I hope). But, oh, the iPod is a beautiful thing...

Hope you resolve your Bluetooth issues and your new toy is everything you hope for (although the tea thing may be a bit far...)

The iPod is indeed a beautiful thing. One word of advice - if you want the battery to go the full 8 hours between charging, just press play on your song list. If you constantly switch between menus, it depletes the battery in double quick time.

My new laptop is a long-awaited new baby. I've been making do with an aged Mitac, running Win95 for the last 5 years on the French trips. This year, I decided that even if we can't solve the internet connection and I still have to rely on Cybercafes, I'm going to get my Spike fix by taking my DVDs with me. What do you mean the tea thing may be a bit far...? I'm relying on it to do that. ;-)

Thanks for the advice about the iPod. The horror stories about battery life almost put me off, but most of the reviews seemed to think it was a small price to pay.

I like a woman who has her priorities right. When are you off to France?

You're welcome. I'll probably be coming to you for advice about the Dell. Do you have a PC or laptop?

Damn right! Ssshhhh - don't tell MWNN but I've ordered Season 7 from Amazon to take with me. Fingers crossed it arrives before we leave at the end of April.

I have the pic I'm sending you all enveloped up and ready to send off to you. Just need to get the stamps.

PC - and at all of 18 months old, it is now virtually obsolete. A lap-top is on my wish list for when I take off and freelance, and I'll probably go for another Dell. This one has been pretty well the best I've used (tempting fate - hope it's not listening) and they seem pretty good with the customer service.

I've ordered Season 7

Is it due soon then? Must get over to Amazon.
