Midimeet 2010

writercon magic
writerconuk has begun registration for Midimeet 2010. The Con is to be held in Coventry, from Friday 6th August to Sunday 8th.

Gacked from lilachigh

I am quite sure that out there, some of you will be busy signing up - like me - others will be thinking all those negative type thoughts.

i.e. I'd like to go but - I won't know anyone. The answer to this one is that within 20 mins you will probably know more people than you want to know! Let me paint you a picture - hopefully you will arrive - by car or train - make your way to hotel, sign in, get your room, come downstairs and in the corner of the seating area by the bar you will find an assorted bunch of people, all ages, sizes and sexes, making rather a lot of noise. They will be drinking - coffee, beer, cola - some will be eating lunch, some playing with models - not the Kate Moss sort! But because there will only be a limited number, you will be absorbed into the whole, rather like an amoeba. Do I mean an amoeba? Sounds horrid, but actually it is quite pleasant.

i.e. My fandom is quite small - what if no one else is interested? Answer: someone will be. someone will have had a secret desire to talk about your fandom that has never been realised before.

i.e. I'm shy and hate having to speak to new people. Answer - well, you don't have to. You can sit in corner of sofa quite silently because, believe me, there are enough people there who have no trouble in talking for Britain. You might even find it difficult to add even a simple comment until they draw breath.

i.e. I don't write - I just read or make icons. No problem. Writercon is for everyone interested in the genre. It's called Writercon because WriterReaderBetaIconMakercon was deemed to be too unwieldy as a title!

i.e. I went to an American con and felt lonely with all those hundreds of people who seemed to know each other already. Answer - I defy anyone to comment that they felt lonely or left out at any of the UK Writercons. Of course some of us know other people - in a year's time, if you come, you will know people too!

So do come and join us. We'll be watching out for you. And, believe me, it is enormous fun. I have never been to a conference where so much laughing takes place.

I was just thinking that I could create an article for WriterconUK to the fandom wiki Fanlore since it doesn't have one yet. Do you have any specific information that I should include?

edit: I forgot, here's the article for the US Writercon as an example.

(I'd love to come this year, but it's again on a bit of a bad time for me, on a weekend when I probably will have to be elsewhere)

I'd love you to create an article for fandom wiki. Most of the info, including how we came into being, is on the 'about us' page on the website.

It's a real shame that you haven't made it over for any of the Midimeets. We tend to hold them in August for those who are able to have time off work in the school holidays.

How's this? Anything you think I should add?

And I seem to be cursed when it comes to the Midimeet - I have my 30th birthday on the 4th and so I already sort of have other plans for that weekend (last year I was planning a small tour of England that would have included dropping by at the Midimeet, but then my grandparents fell ill and I had to cancel all my travel plans for the summer).

As I just commented to Kazzy-Cee I'm thinking about this.

It depends on work stuff and other things I have booked and I'm not sure what I can contribute because I've rarely written for fandom but it looks like fun

Some attendees are not writers or artists or betas or vidders but come along because they are still connected to the fandoms. It is great fun and I hope you can make it.
